Lindsey Vonn Back in the U.S. After Injury at Winter Olympics
American Olympic athlete Lindsey Vonn expressed relief on Monday about returning to the United States after struggling to stand for over a week.
On February 8, she suffered a severe leg injury during the women’s alpine ski downhill event at the 2026 Milan-Cortina Games. This incident followed her battle with a torn ACL, which had already hindered her Olympic performance. It’s a tough setback, I guess, especially after showing such determination to compete.
Vonn shared her journey on social media, stating that she had undergone several surgeries to mend her leg and might require more once back in the U.S. “It feels wonderful to be back on my home soil,” she noted. The last week was a challenge, stuck in a hospital bed in Italy, unable to move around.
The 41-year-old former Olympic champion had to be airlifted from the scene of her accident, where medical officials confirmed she suffered a “compound fracture of the tibia.” Even before the games, there were questions about her ability to compete, but Vonn was undeterred and aimed to secure a medal in her event.
Despite the accident’s aftermath, she seemed to have no regrets about her decision to race, emphasizing the thrill she felt in the starting gate. “Sometimes we fall,” she reflected. “But that’s part of the journey.” As someone who admires resilience, it’s inspiring to see her attitude, even in tough times.
Regardless of how things turned out, for Vonn, every moment racing is a mix of hope and risk, much like life itself.
