This week marks the PGA Tour’s second signature event of the season, the Genesis Invitational.
Collin Morikawa kicked things off at Pebble Beach, achieving the lowest score to par and taking the lead overall. The idea behind this event is to showcase top players on renowned courses, so it makes sense that it’s happening again this week in Los Angeles.
Here are a few key storylines to watch as the tournament progresses.
Genesis Returns to Los Angeles
You might remember that last year, the Genesis Invitational couldn’t be held at the Riviera Country Club due to severe wildfires. Ludwig Aberg ended up taking the victory, but at Torrey Pines South.
This year is special—it’s the 100th anniversary of the event, which began in 1926. Riviera has been a part of the PGA Tour for over five decades, making it quite a hallmark location.
While Aberg is the reigning champion, the last time someone actually won at Riviera was Hideki Matsuyama the year before, who made a memorable comeback from a six-stroke deficit to clinch the title.
Rory McIlroy Seeks Stability
Rory completed a career grand slam last year, so it’s not quite right to say he’s still searching for something. But, there are still goals to chase as he continues his career.
He’s aiming for his 30th PGA Tour victory, which is a big deal. While the Masters got a lot of attention, Lowry also snagged several wins last year, which makes you think McIlroy could find himself on that path this season. Last week at Pebble, he finished T14 in his season debut, and as the weekend rolls on, he’s bound to make some noise.
Tommy Fleetwood’s Steady Rise at Genesis
Everyone knows now that Tommy Fleetwood can follow up his impressive performance at the Tour Championship with wins on the PGA Tour, and there’s a sense of anticipation around when his next victory might come.
Interestingly, he’s shown consistent improvement each time he competes at Genesis.
- 2018: T37
- 2019: T28
- 2023: T20
- 2024: T10
- 2025: T5
If this trend keeps up, Fleetwood could very well place among the top four this year, which might provide him a solid shot at securing a win.
