New Baby Giraffe at Toledo Zoo Captivates Visitors
Zoo-goers are charmed by a baby giraffe, just four weeks old, and its unique hairstyle.
The Toledo Zoo and Aquarium in Ohio introduced Eugene on January 17, when he weighed around 130 pounds at birth.
He’s fitting in nicely with a group of seven other giraffes.
Zookeepers mention that people can’t get enough of the calf’s joyful demeanor and his distinctive tufts of fur.
For now, visitors can see Eugene through an indoor window, with plans for him to explore outside come spring as the weather warms.
Eugene was born to Lily and Rocket. While this is Lily’s first calf, Rocket has sired others previously.
“He’s really coming into his personality,” zoo director Jennifer Brazil shared.
“When he met the other giraffes, they were curious about him, and he was quite intrigued by them as well.
“Everyone just adores him.”
The tuft of hair atop Eugene’s head has made him a sensation, especially on social media.
“He has this little tuft up there,” said zookeeper Jennifer Blashill.
“Typically, giraffes don’t go to outdoor exhibits in Africa until temperatures hit around 50 degrees.”
“So, we’re looking at spring for his first outdoor appearance, when it gets a bit warmer,” she added.
The choice of the name Eugene stemmed from a suggestion that now seems ideal for his blossoming character.
“It really seems to suit him. He’s grown into that name very well,” Blashill noted.
