Tricia McLaughlin Resigns from Homeland Security Position
Tricia McLaughlin, a 31-year-old supporter of the Trump administration’s policies on illegal immigration, announced her resignation as assistant secretary of Homeland Security on Tuesday.
A source within the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) shared with The New York Times that McLaughlin, who previously worked as a communications aide for Ohio Governor Mike DeWine and has been involved with ABC News, had originally intended to retire in December. However, she decided to extend her tenure after facing criticism following the killings of anti-Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) activists, Alex Preti and Renee Goode.
In her own words, McLaughlin expressed a desire to return to Cincinnati with her husband, a Republican strategist, to start a family, following their marriage in August.
When asked about future political ambitions, she mentioned, “I’m not ruling anything out.”
In a statement on Tuesday, she thanked President Trump, Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem, and the American people, underscoring her pride in serving the nation.
“I am really proud of the team we’ve assembled and what this administration has achieved,” she stated.
McLaughlin also revealed that Lauren Biss would step up as the new assistant secretary for public affairs. Katie Zachariah will take on the dual role of spokesperson for DHS and deputy assistant secretary.
Noem praised McLaughlin for her exceptional dedication and professionalism, highlighting her significant contributions to enhancing national security. She expressed regret over McLaughlin’s departure.
Caroline Levitt, the White House press secretary, also voiced her sadness at McLaughlin’s resignation, calling her a strong advocate for Trump and federal law enforcement.
While Republicans expressed gratitude for McLaughlin’s work in fulfilling Trump’s pledges to the American populace, Democrats criticized her role. Congressman Rob Menendez of New Jersey remarked that he hoped McLaughlin would reflect on the harm caused during her tenure.
Menendez, whose father is a former Democratic senator, has been an advocate for immigrant rights, emphasizing his opposition to her actions at DHS.
House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries labeled McLaughlin a “MAGA extremist,” implying she was forced out of her position.
Previously, McLaughlin had dismissed similar remarks.
In a recent post, she shared a meme from ‘Rick and Morty’ with the caption “Your boo means nothing,” reflecting her outlook amidst the turmoil.
Officials at DHS mentioned that McLaughlin faced considerable criticism from Democrats, which reportedly placed her and her family under threat.
