Shinedown is facing backlash from fans, who have called the band “cowards” after their lead vocalist announced their exit from the Rock the Country festival, an event led by Kid Rock.
The band’s initial involvement stirred up a lot of mixed feelings among fans. Brent Smith explained, “We witnessed infighting like never before, and it was our job to defuse it. It’s important to recognize that the phrase ‘United States of America’ is more than just words; right now, many feel anything but united.”
Some fans were clearly displeased with the withdrawal, stating that Shinedown chose to abandon their core supporters. One user on X expressed, “I’m a fan, but I feel like they’ve failed their supporters. Good luck navigating future collaborations with other bands.” Meanwhile, Shinedown’s drummer, Barry Karch, called out fellow musician Ludacris as “a coward” for his own similar choice to back out of the festival.
Comments continued pouring in, with one fan saying, “It seemed like they caved to pressure, which just isn’t like them. They could’ve performed with the unity they’ve always championed.” Another fan reflected on past decisions, suggesting that Shinedown is alienating their dedicated followers by trying to please those who weren’t supportive in the first place.
Interestingly, not all responses were negative. Some fans voiced their approval of the band’s decision to pull out. “As a devoted Shinedown fan, I support their choice,” remarked one user. Another chimed in, noting that the negativity surrounding the festival is likely why they opted out.
On February 6, Shinedown made their abrupt announcement, stating that they prioritize unity in their mission as artists. “Shinedown is for everyone,” the band noted. “We want to unite, not divide, and after careful consideration, we concluded that performing at the Rock the Country Festival might foster division instead.”
Shortly after Shinedown’s announcement, a Kid Rock event was also canceled in South Carolina due to “unforeseen circumstances.” The festival was set to occur on July 25th and 26th, but it’s now off the schedule. Interestingly, Rock the Country aims to celebrate the 250th anniversary of American independence and intends to tour several states in 2026, including Georgia, Texas, Florida, and New York.
