Nor’easter Expected to Hit Northeast This Weekend
The Philadelphia, New York City, and Boston areas are preparing for a significant nor’easter this weekend, with forecasts predicting heavy snowfall that could impact millions along the Interstate 95 corridor as well as other regions in the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic.
Nevertheless, there remains a fair bit of uncertainty surrounding the forecasts.
According to the FOX Prediction Center, “snow is the most likely outcome, but all scenarios remain possible—from a simple miss that sends the storm out to sea to a major nor’easter.” It’s a bit of a waiting game, really.
Forecasters are monitoring the storm system as it travels along the British Columbia coast, with expectations that it will reach the contiguous United States by Thursday night. This is part of a series of storms rolling in from the west this week.
These systems are likely to bring some light rainfall to the Northeast over the weekend as the potential nor’easter approaches.
The storm, which began in Canada, is anticipated to travel offshore before hitting the East Coast, potentially evolving into a robust coastal storm by Sunday, as hinted by the FOX Prediction Center.
While traditional computer models and AI predictions both point toward developing coastal systems, there’s no solid consensus on their strength or exact paths.
Interestingly, several AI models do suggest a chance of significant snowfall from Sunday night into Monday, but we’ll have to see how it all plays out.
For a major impact to occur, several conditions must align precisely. We’re talking about a slow and careful trajectory along the Northeast coast and sufficient cold air streaming down from Canada.
If any of these critical elements don’t pan out, the snowfall could be minimal.
The most significant uncertainties revolve around how quickly the storm will intensify as it approaches the Great Lakes and where it will ultimately emerge off the East Coast.
Despite the uncertainties in the forecast, many in the region are bracing for what could be yet another hit during what seems to be one of the more active winter seasons in recent memory.
In fact, many cities in the Northeast are still dealing with lingering snow from January’s historic winter storm.
As the weekend draws nearer, the details of the forecast are likely to sharpen. Fingers crossed, I suppose.
