Kansas City Chiefs Player Defends Teammate Amid Controversial Comments
Chris Jones, a standout for the Kansas City Chiefs, recently backed Travis Kelce after former general manager Mike Tannenbaum suggested the team might need to consider letting Kelce go in favor of a younger player.
Tannenbaum made his remarks during an appearance on ESPN’s SportsCenter, indicating that the Chiefs should look ahead when assessing players, rather than just reflecting on past performances. He specifically pointed to Kelce and mentioned how the front office should focus on the future potential rather than past achievements.
Tannenbaum stated, “When you’re in the front office, you have to anticipate what the players are going to do. That’s not what they did. I’ve made that mistake countless times in my career. And while Travis Kelce is a first-ballot Hall of Famer, when you look at him and honestly evaluate his performance in 2025, it’s clear his best days are behind him.” He emphasized the need for the Chiefs to make challenging decisions to bring a younger, more dynamic player into the tight end position.
In response, Jones had a brief yet pointed reaction on social media: “Shut up,” which certainly showcased his strong loyalty towards Kelce.
As for Kelce, who has won three Super Bowls and is an 11-time Pro Bowler, his performance has indeed seen noticeable shifts in recent seasons. While there’s been a decrease in stats, he still managed to secure 76 catches and five touchdowns last season, totaling 851 yards. His previous season had seen even more receptions, suggesting he can still be an asset, especially for the backup quarterback, should the need arise.
Meanwhile, discussions around Kelce’s potential retirement could also affect the Chiefs’ strategy moving forward. His decision remains uncertain, adding an intriguing layer to the unfolding narrative.
