The Writers Guild of America West Employees Union on Strike
The Writers Guild of America West Employees Union (WGASU) has initiated a strike, coinciding with one month remaining before negotiations with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP) begin.
On Tuesday, the union announced a halt to all operations until further notice. Their members are set to picket outside the WGA West office in Los Angeles. Formed in the spring of 2025, the union has consistently requested improved pay and job protections in their original contract. Negotiations aimed at securing a better deal have been ongoing since September, with the last session taking place on January 17.
WGASU has alleged multiple instances of bad faith bargaining on the part of management. They claimed on Tuesday that the employer has been monitoring employees for union activities, terminating supporters, and engaging in superficial negotiations without a genuine intention to resolve core issues.
The union also filed charges concerning unfair labor practices, noting that they have informed the National Labor Relations Board about the alleged illegal firing of organizing committee members.
A spokesperson for WGA West mentioned that they would still strive to negotiate in good faith during the strike. They respect the employee union’s right to strike and have made a comprehensive proposal that includes various protections and enhancements to compensation and working conditions during recent negotiations.
Moreover, the WGSU is seeking assurances regarding the use of generative AI. Management expressed that they do not plan to use generative AI, but they also noted concerns that staff suggestions could potentially restrict future usage of the technology.
