Neil deGrasse Tyson’s Views on Transgender Athletes Spark Controversy

Neil deGrasse Tyson, a prominent advocate for science, has stirred debate by suggesting that athletes be classified based on their hormone levels rather than gender, a proposal that could undermine women’s sports.

This discussion unfolded during Tyson’s appearance on Bill Maher’s podcast, *Club Random*, where the topic of transgender athletes in sports led to Tyson proposing the elimination of gender-based categories.

Maher referred to LGBTQ+ tennis icon Martina Navratilova, who has voiced her disagreement with Tyson’s stance. Tyson seemed surprised and asked, “Why is she mad at me?” to which Maher humorously responded, “Because you basically think guys with penises should be in the women’s pool.”

Tyson attempted to clarify his position, stating, “In this emerging space where you have people who express themselves on the gender spectrum and now want to compete in sports, it’s still an unexplored area to solve. And I don’t have the answer, but maybe our focus should be on hormonal ratios instead of gender.”

He illustrated his viewpoint with a vague example of a woman facing disqualification from women’s sports due to having elevated testosterone levels, though he didn’t specify who the athlete was or which sport was involved.

This approach, while perhaps intended to be inclusive, could effectively lead to the end of women’s sports as we know them; men, through hormone therapy, could compete successfully in women’s categories, while women would find it nearly impossible to compete in men’s sports. Thus, men’s competitions could thrive, while women’s categories might vanish.

Interestingly, Tyson later remarked on hormones having a role in sperm and egg production. Maher chimed in, “I make sperm,” to which Tyson replied, “That’s what hormones do.” Yet, it’s important to note that no biologically male person can produce eggs, stressing the limitations of such hormone-based arguments.

Maher expressed strong disagreement with Tyson’s proposal, criticizing the idea that society should reshape itself around a small segment of the population who identify as transgender. He pointed out, “This attempt to realign society as a whole around a tiny percentage… is not pretending that every baby is a jump ball,” implying a disconnect in logic.

In disbelief, Maher pressed on, asking, “How many people fit this description of the sport needing to be reorganized?” He illustrated his point by contrasting the competitive disparity between the WNBA and the NBA, highlighting that such redefinitions might not be warranted.

Tyson also brought up a controversial historical claim, suggesting that “there was a time” when “science” proved racial inequalities, which led Maher to react with an incredulous “Oh my god.”

The friction between Tyson and Maher over transgender issues is not a new phenomenon. They have clashed on this topic before, discussing its implications on women’s sports and debating various viewpoints.

During another episode of *Real Time with Bill Maher*, Maher referenced Laura Helmuth’s resignation from *Scientific American*, prompting a discussion about the magazine’s claims that gender differences among athletes are socially constructed, a notion Maher found nonsensical.

Ultimately, their discussions reflect a broader societal struggle over how to address and integrate emerging views on gender and sports, each engaging with the complexities—and contradictions—within these debates.
