Canadian Mint Celebrates 30 Years of the $2 Toonie

30th Anniversary of the Canadian Toonie

The Royal Canadian Mint is marking the 30-year milestone of the Canadian $2 coin, affectionately known as the Toonie, by releasing a limited edition uncirculated special wrap roll aimed at collectors. This celebration signifies three decades since the introduction of bimetallic coins in 1996, which replaced $2 banknotes.

Since its launch, over 1 billion Toonies have circulated, each sporting the familiar image of a polar bear, designed by Canadian artist Brent Townsend. The coin quickly integrated into daily transactions, following the success of the $1 coin that debuted in 1987. Various commemorative versions have also been issued over the years.

“For the past 30 years, our $2 circulation coin has been a cornerstone of Canadian trade and commerce, allowing the Mint to tell significant stories through various commemorative designs,” remarked Simon Kamel, Interim President and CEO of the Canadian Mint. “As we acknowledge Toonie’s 30th birthday today, we’re hopeful for many more years ahead.”

Design and Composition

The Toonie was Canada’s first bimetallic circulating coin. It consists of an inner core and an outer ring, securely locked together. Townsend’s polar bear design continues to grace the reverse side.

The obverse displayed a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II until 2022, which included a special edition released after her passing. Beginning in 2023, coins will feature a portrait of Charles III, crafted by Canadian artist Stephen Rosati.

Initially, the coin was made with a copper alloy core and a pure nickel outer ring, but in 2012, the Mint switched to a multi-layer plated steel composition and enhanced security features.

Anniversary Collector Roll

The anniversary roll is limited to 30,000 units and priced at $89.95 CAD.

For those interested, purchases can be made through the Mint’s website or by contacting their offices in Canada or the United States, including Mint Boutiques in Ottawa and Winnipeg, as well as authorized dealers and distributors.
