Vice President Critiques Ocasio-Cortez’s Interview Performance
J.D. Vance, the Vice President, took aim at Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) following a notably awkward moment during her interview at the Munich Security Conference.
The 36-year-old Democratic congresswoman struggled to articulate her stance on whether the U.S. should defend Taiwan against a potential Chinese aggression. This led to an uncomfortable pause of about 20 seconds where she seemed lost for words.
“Does anyone really think AOC offers insightful ideas on global order or U.S. policy?” Vance quipped.
Ocasio-Cortez then attempted to explain, saying, “Well, you know, I think this is, like, a long-standing policy for the U.S.” But her delivery didn’t inspire much confidence.
During a speech on Thursday at a gathering organized by Donald Trump’s “Peace Committee,” Vance continued to mock Ocasio-Cortez’s performance. He remarked about being tempted to emulate her moment of silence, stating, “I might just stand still for 20 seconds and see if they say something nice about me, like I said about Congressman Cortez.”
Ocasio-Cortez presumably aimed to elevate her public profile, possibly in hopes of securing a higher political position. However, her lackluster reply fell flat and hindered those ambitions.
In a bid to reclaim some credibility, she took to social media to respond to Vance’s mockery. She noted, “The only thing that lasted longer than my thought for a second was their silence on his joke,” and added a skull emoji to her post.
Vance reiterated his criticism in an interview, expressing concerns about politicians who are unable to stray from their scripted responses. “It’s something I see often with people in Washington; if they step outside their comfort zone, they crumble,” he said. “People might really ask if AOC has substantial ideas about Asia or European policy.”
