Historic Win for Johannes Hessfrod Klaebo at the Winter Olympics

Norwegian cross-country skier Johannes Hessfrod Klaebo uniquely distinguished himself during the Milan-Cortina Games on Saturday.

Klaebo secured his sixth gold medal in the 50km mass start, making history as the athlete with the most golds in a single Winter Olympics. He surpassed the previous record of five golds held by American speed skater Eric Heiden at the 1980 Lake Placid Olympics.

It’s worth noting, though, Heiden’s record remains intact for individual events, as Klaebo’s numbers include some team victories.

During the race, Klaebo’s teammates, Marin Løström Njeget and Emil Iversen, clinched silver and bronze, respectively. The trio from Norway established an early advantage, maintaining a significant lead throughout the race.

As they approached the final hill, Klaebo surged ahead, and from there, he didn’t look back.

Earlier in these Games, he had already reached a milestone, being the first Winter Olympian to achieve at least ten gold medals, currently boasting a total of 13. Interestingly, Michael Phelps finished his career with 23 at a younger age.

This triumph also marked Norway’s 18th gold medal, further extending their lead in total Olympic medals to 40. In fact, just a day before, Norway set a record for the most gold medals accumulated by a country in a single Winter Olympics, with Johannes Dahle-Skjevdal winning the 15km mass start.
