Recently leaked audio has exposed discussions among high-ranking Mexican naval officers regarding a cover-up of fuel theft and smuggling operations that implicate the military’s top echelons and members of Mexico’s ruling Morena party. Remarkably, the operation involved the nephews of the then-naval chief.
“We either spill the beans on all this, or I couldn’t care less who gets caught because I’m not involved, or we wrap this up by relocating these troublemakers,” said Rafael Ojeda, Mexico’s former naval chief, in a recording disclosed by Aristegui Online.
The audio captures a conversation among Ojeda, the late Vice Admiral Fernando Ruben Guerrero Alcantar, and two unidentified naval officers. During this exchange, Guerrero Alcantar alerted them about a substantial fuel smuggling operation involving top naval figures, including two of Ojeda’s nephews. Ojeda urged Guerrero Alcantar to document everything meticulously, including names and details. This dialogue is thought to have occurred around 2024, while President Andres Manuel López Obrador was still in power.
As reported by Breitbart Texas, Guerrero Alcantar was murdered shortly after raising concerns. His killing happened just months before another officer, Captain Adrian Omar del Ángel Zuniga, died in a training accident after voicing similar worries about fuel theft. These murders have fueled suspicions about a deliberate effort to obstruct investigations.
On Thursday, President Claudia Sheinbaum expressed her support for current Navy Secretary Pedro Raimundo Morales, who is accused of being aware of a probe into the fuel smuggling case. She stated that there is an active investigation into operations involving naval officers, but assured that her secretary is not implicated in any wrongdoing.
