Ukrainian officials have apprehended a suspect tied to a “terrorist attack” in Lviv that resulted in the death of a police officer and injuries to 25 others, as announced by President Volodymyr Zelenskiy on Sunday.
In a message on X, President Zelenskiy shared that the Interior Minister, Ihor Klimenko, confirmed the suspect’s arrest following the incident that took place early in the morning.
“My thoughts are with the family and friends affected… We are providing all necessary support for the investigation. The processes for dealing with those involved are underway. The Home Office will share updates as needed,” he stated.
According to the Ukrainian National Police, they had received a report about a break-in at a store on Danilyshin Street around 12:30 a.m.
The initial explosion occurred shortly after the first patrol arrived. A second blast followed when another patrol responded.
Initial reports suggest that an improvised explosive device concealed in a trash can in the city center was responsible for the detonations.
Following the attack, police launched an extensive operation, deploying explosives experts, dog units, and other specialist teams.
The National Police confirmed that the attack claimed the life of 23-year-old police officer Victoria Szpilka and left 25 others injured, with some in critical condition. Eleven of the injured were hospitalized, including six law enforcement officers.
A 33-year-old woman from the Rivne region was detained hours later near the border area of Stary Sambil in connection with the incident.
Authorities allege she received instructions from a “custodian” linked to Russian special forces to create and place the explosive device.
“We have strong reason to believe that this act was orchestrated by Russia. This isn’t the first instance where the enemy has set traps aimed at Ukrainian law enforcement. Simultaneously, we also utilize citizens we have conscripted,” Klimenko remarked.
