Bar where Matt Boldy's mom is employed celebrates USA star's Olympics goal

Olympic Pride for Matt Boldy

Matt Boldy’s impressive performance at the Olympics in Italy ignited a wave of pride in his hometown.

At the Catman Café in Mansfield, Massachusetts, where his mother, Jen, works as a bartender, the excitement hit a peak when Boldy netted the first goal for the U.S. during the Olympic men’s hockey gold medal game against Canada. The atmosphere was electric as fans gathered early for the 8:10 a.m. ET puck drop in Milan, cheering loudly when Boldy scored after navigating past two defenders.

Local news outlet WBZ captured the enthusiastic crowd, which couldn’t contain its excitement. Almost immediately, chants of “USA!” filled the air, accompanied by colorful balloons.

Boldy, at 24 years old, skillfully maneuvered the puck around Canadian defenders before sliding it past goaltender Jordan Binnington, giving the U.S. a 1-0 lead. NBC commentator Eddie Olczyk referred to the goal as “magical.”

Interestingly, this hockey final recalls the famous “miracle on ice” game, where the U.S. pulled off a shocking win against the Soviet Union in the 1980 Lake Placid Olympics.

Team USA is vying for its first gold medal in men’s hockey since those legendary days. They’ve come close in the years since, losing to Canada in both the 2002 Salt Lake City Games and the 2010 Vancouver Games.

On the other hand, Canada hopes to secure its tenth gold medal since the NHL tournament in Sochi back in 2014. Having bested their North American rivals last February in a thrilling overtime finish, they are looking for another victory.

The gold medal match concluded in a 1-1 tie and advanced to overtime, keeping fans on the edge of their seats.
