Rebecca Gayheart Reflects on Husband Eric Dane’s Passing
Rebecca Gayheart is expressing her grief following the death of her estranged husband, Eric Dane. Just days after the “Grey’s Anatomy” star died from ALS, the 54-year-old actress reached out on social media to appreciate the support she’s received.
In an Instagram Story shared on Sunday, she mentioned, “I am so touched by the outpouring of love and support from our community. There are no words to express my gratitude.” She added that this support means a lot during such a challenging time.
Dane, who was 53, passed away on February 19th. His family released a heartfelt statement to share the news. “It is with heavy hearts that we share that Eric Dane passed away on Thursday afternoon after a courageous battle with ALS,” they stated.
They went on to describe his final moments spent with his beloved friends, devoted wife, and two daughters, Billie and Georgia. The statement highlighted Dane’s passion for raising awareness about ALS, underscoring his commitment to helping others facing similar challenges. The family also requested privacy as they navigate their loss.
In light of Dane’s passing, a GoFundMe campaign has been set up by family friends to support Gayheart and their two teenage daughters. The funds raised aim to assist with education and basic needs as they face uncertain times ahead.
Dane, originally from San Francisco, began his acting career in the 1990s with minor roles in shows like “Saved by the Bell.” His major breakthrough came in 2000 with a role in “Charmed.” However, he truly rose to fame when he portrayed Dr. Mark Sloan, also known as “McSteamy,” on “Grey’s Anatomy” starting in 2006.
In April 2025, Dane publicly revealed his diagnosis of ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease. During an interview, he expressed his determination to fight the illness, mentioning that he was willing to take unconventional measures if necessary.
Dane’s positive attitude shone through as he acknowledged the hope he found in his medical team. “I’m very hopeful… I don’t think this is the end of my story,” he shared, conveying a sense of resilience.
He and Gayheart married in 2004 but separated in 2017. Even though divorce papers were filed, they were withdrawn in April 2025, shortly before his ALS announcement.
