An emotional Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) expressed frustration over the criticism she faced at the recent Munich Security Conference. This came after she struggled to respond to a question regarding the U.S. defense of Taiwan amid a Chinese invasion.

“If you think I don’t grasp foreign policy outside of my experience with international issues, just consider one of the most sensitive geopolitical concerns today. It’s unfortunate if people think I lack understanding, but perhaps it reflects on your expectations of a president who doesn’t consider his words carefully,” a visibly hoarse Ocasio-Cortez said in a late-night Instagram Live that gained traction online.

The backlash from her appearance in Munich ignited significant controversy on February 13, leading conservatives to question her readiness for the 2028 Democratic presidential primary.

“Well, I think this is, you know, a very, uh…long-standing policy of the United States,” she remarked, pausing when asked about whether the U.S. would defend Taiwan against a potential invasion by China aimed at enforcing the “one China” policy.

Ocasio-Cortez’s apparent struggle with the topic drew attention on social media, with critics pointing out her difficulties in addressing U.S. support for Taiwan.

“What we want to ensure is that we prevent that situation from happening, and we aim to progress in all areas of our economy, research, and global standing to sidestep such conflicts,” she added.

Vice President J.D. Vance, a likely contender in the 2028 presidential race, weighed in multiple times on Ocasio-Cortez’s comments this week.

“She doesn’t seem to know what she’s really thinking. It’s a common theme in Washington where politicians stick to their scripts, and when prompted to veer off, they falter completely,” Vance stated during an interview on Fox News’ “The Story with Martha McCallum.”

“It was quite embarrassing. If I had been in her position, I would have thought, ‘Maybe I should read a book about China and Taiwan before taking the global stage again.’ I hope Congressman Cortez can find that kind of humility, though I’m skeptical.”
