Former NFL Player Roniel Whittaker Passes Away at 46

Roniel Whittaker, a former NFL defensive back who spent two seasons with the Minnesota Vikings, has sadly passed away, according to a family announcement made on Sunday. He was just 46 years old.

His family shared a statement through the Vikings organization, although the cause of death remains undisclosed.

“Born March 19, 1979, Roniel lived a life filled with passion, perseverance, and purpose,” the statement said. “A talented athlete, he proudly played high school football at Lake Taylor High School in Norfolk, Virginia, and continued on to college football with the Virginia Tech Hokies, where his remarkable skills and leadership left a lasting impression.”

Whittaker excelled at Virginia Tech before signing with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers as an undrafted free agent in 2003. He played in four games with the team but was released in 2005 without making it onto the main roster or practice squad.

In 2006, he joined the Vikings, appearing in 27 games over his time there, recording 31 tackles, one fumble recovery, and one pass breakup.

He briefly sought to extend his career with the Detroit Lions, though he didn’t get the opportunity to play there. Additionally, Whittaker had experiences in NFL Europe and was part of the Winnipeg Blue Bombers in the Canadian Football League.

After leaving professional football, he became the defensive backs coach at Chanhassen High School from 2014 to 2018 and, since 2011, served as CEO and owner of Whitaker Group, LLC, which focuses on relocation transactions and short sales.

His family noted, “While many knew of his accomplishments in sports, those closest to him cherished his generous spirit, unwavering loyalty, and profound love for his family. He was a protector, mentor, and a source of strength and joy for everyone fortunate enough to know him.”

In light of his passing, the family has requested privacy during this difficult time.

“During this incredibly difficult time, our family asks for prayers, love, and privacy as we grieve this great loss and celebrate the life of a man who meant so much to so many,” they stated.
