USA Men’s Hockey Team Honors Late Player’s Family
A heartfelt connection unfolded during a recent call involving President Donald Trump and the USA men’s hockey team, who were celebrating their gold medal win. Alongside FBI Director Kash Patel, the team expressed their emotions by inviting the family of a late player to join them.
After a thrilling 2-1 victory against Team Canada, a moment caught the attention of viewers. On the ice, several young boys, dressed in oversized jerseys, posed for team photos. These boys—Noah and Johnny Jr.—are the children of the late Johnny Gaudreau, a standout player whose life was tragically cut short.
In 2023, 31-year-old Gaudreau and his 29-year-old brother Matthew lost their lives in a devastating accident caused by a drunk driver while they were riding bikes in New Jersey. Johnny had been playing for the Columbus Blue Jackets in the NHL, while Matthew was previously active in the ECHL.
In a meaningful gesture, Team USA invited Gaudreau’s widow, Meredith, along with the players’ parents, Guy and Jane, to witness the gold medal match in Italy. The presence of the family was palpable as they cheered on the team.
Auston Matthews, the captain, shared his thoughts: “To perform like that, win the gold, and include his jersey in the team photo—it means a lot for us to honor him.” He continued, acknowledging that Gaudreau’s spirit was felt throughout the tournament.
Meredith expressed her joy in being part of the event, stating it was an opportunity to represent her late husband. She shared that she received only two days’ notice about traveling to Italy, but she felt compelled to make the journey for her children and honor Johnny.
“It’s a once-in-a-lifetime chance for the kids,” she reflected. “I feel like I need to honor John and ensure that the kids understand how special their father was.” This sentiment was both poignant and deeply moving.
Dylan Larkin, another player, echoed the family’s feelings, saying, “This is the greatest loss that we’ve faced. It felt right to have Johnny Jr. and Noah with us.” He humorously speculated that the Gaudreau brothers may have helped the team defensively, lightening the mood amidst the gravity of the occasion.
In her own tribute, Katie, Johnny’s sister, spoke jokingly about her brother’s style of play, adding a layer of personal sentiment to the story.
