Tragic Avalanche Incident in Utah
An 11-year-old girl from Massachusetts lost her life in an avalanche while skiing in Utah, according to police reports.
The victim, Madeline Eitas from Rochester, was caught in the avalanche at Brighton Ski Resort around 12:30 p.m. on Thursday, February 19th.
When help arrived, Madeline’s family had already initiated search and rescue efforts, along with more than 20 local residents, as noted by the Greater Salt Lake Unified Police Department.
Notably, her brother, Cameron Atas, is being praised for his quick thinking. He used a location app to help find Madeline, although details about the specific app remain unclear.
After she was located, paramedics performed life-saving measures before transporting her to a nearby hospital. Sadly, Madeline passed away at the hospital.
“Our hearts go out to the family during this incredibly tough time,” the authorities stated. “The support from our community here in Utah, along with those from Massachusetts, is essential in providing the family with comfort and compassion in the days to come.”
Madeline was fondly remembered as a passionate soccer player who cherished her family and friends. As a 6th-generation member of her family, she was deeply loved.
In a social media tribute, her team described her as “a bright and wonderful girl” who left a profound mark on all who knew her. They expressed that this heartbreaking news has impacted the entire community, and she will be missed immensely.
The Rochester Police Department also expressed its condolences to Madeline’s family and encouraged the community to support them during this painful time. They remarked on the tremendous loss felt for a young life filled with so much promise and joy.
Tragically, the loss follows closely on the heels of another incident where a father was killed in a similar avalanche while snowmobiling with his son near a ski resort in Utah. The Wasatch County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that this happened around 4 p.m. on February 18th.
The investigation revealed that an adult male was snowmobiling in the area when the avalanche struck, resulting in him becoming entangled in the snow.
Brighton Ski Resort has yet to comment on the incidents reported.
