Murder Charge Against Utah Mother Who Promoted Children’s Book

A mother in Utah, reportedly obsessed with money and public image, has faced serious allegations after promoting a children’s book that centers around her husband’s drug overdose. Prosecutors assert that her book is rooted in murder.

Kuri Richens, 35, is accused of killing her husband, Eric Richens, with a fentanyl-laced Moscow Mule on March 3, 2022. Prosecutor Bradley Bloodworth claimed that Kuri’s motive was financial, seeking to claim a $4 million fortune and start anew with her handyman boyfriend.

This case has sent shockwaves through the affluent ski community where the couple lived, especially as it came to light that Kuri might have exploited her husband’s death and her children’s sorrow for personal gain, participating in various media interviews.

Kuri maintains that Eric was a drug addict, suggesting that he overdosed due to prescription medication for chronic back pain.

Bloodworth stated, “Kuri Richens murdered Eric for money and a fresh start in life,” emphasizing her desire for wealth to uphold an image of luxury and success.

The mother of three also allegedly attempted to poison Eric weeks prior, on Valentine’s Day, through his food.

A year following Eric’s death, Kuri published a children’s picture book titled *Are You With Me?*—claiming it was meant to assist her sons in coping with their father’s passing.

Prosecutors highlighted circumstantial evidence, including messages exchanged between Kuri and her boyfriend that suggested a romantic connection just before Eric’s death. Additionally, Kuri had planned a getaway to St. Maarten with this man, scheduled shortly after the incident.

Around the same time, she consulted a divorce lawyer, hinting at intentions to separate.

The day before Eric’s murder, she texted her partner asking, “If I were divorced and you asked me to marry you tomorrow, would you?” Kuri added a personal touch, expressing a wish to “watch a murder documentary and cuddle.”

As financial turmoil loomed, Bloodworth noted Kuri’s real estate company was in dire straits, deeply in debt as she sought to maintain a façade of affluence. Solving her money woes could hinge on Eric’s death, as a prenuptial agreement would bar her from recovering any inheritance in the event of a divorce.

After Kuri allegedly administered the fatal drink, she returned to Eric’s side just after 3 a.m., finding him unresponsive. Interestingly, prosecutors pointed out that she didn’t call emergency services until about 15 minutes later, at 3:21 a.m.

Post-incident, Kuri reportedly deleted messages from her phone and conducted internet searches about police capabilities and life in a luxury prison.

In her defense, lawyer Kathryn Nester argued that Eric’s death stemmed from an accidental overdose, attributing the circumstances to the medications he took for ongoing pain issues. She alleged that Eric’s family had unfairly targeted Kuri from the start, enlisting experts to construct a case against her.

Nester also played a 911 recording of Kuri, where she could be heard in distress, telling the operator, “My husband is not breathing. It’s cold.”

Testimonies included Eric’s family members, with his sister sharing the heart-wrenching moment when they learned about Eric’s passing. They had to inform Kuri’s children about their father’s death shortly after arriving at the scene.

Eric’s father expressed his belief that Kuri misrepresented the cause of Eric’s death and detailed a troubling financial history connected to Eric that included secretive loans and trust funds aimed at protecting his assets.

Just two months post-book release, Kuri was arrested on suspicion of her husband’s murder after nearly a decade of marriage.

Since then, she faces multiple charges, including financial crimes linked to the murder, and had taken out a life insurance policy on Eric without his knowledge just prior to the alleged crime. Prosecutors noted that Eric could see through her schemes, leading him to update his will to exclude Kuri as a beneficiary.

Sitting in jail since her arrest, Kuri has pleaded not guilty to various charges, including aggravated murder and drug possession.
