Chris Hemsworth says leaving LA was the best choice he's ever made

Chris Hemsworth Finds Home in the Australian Outback

For Chris Hemsworth, the journey from Hollywood back to Australia has been like a breath of fresh air. The actor, now 42, revealed that relocating to the peaceful Australian outback was a significant choice he made after feeling out of sorts in Los Angeles. His experience there, filled with “paparazzi and all kinds of traps,” led him to seek a more tranquil life for his family on a sprawling farm in his native Australia.

“At that time, my sons were just born, and honestly, we weren’t enjoying ourselves in LA. We weren’t even filming there; our projects were elsewhere,” he shared during a chat on the podcast “SmartLess.”

When he returned to his LA home, the intrusive paparazzi made the decision to move back even clearer. “You come back to a space filled with distractions,” he noted.

Hemsworth, who shares three kids with his wife, Elsa Pataky, married her just three months after they started dating in 2010. They now live on a big farm in Australia where their children can roam freely.

“To be honest, when I clock off work, do I want a vacation? For me, it’s like coming home; it feels like a getaway. We have horses, bikes, and surfing opportunities,” he explained.

Growing up about 20 minutes outside of Melbourne, Hemsworth reminisced about the adventures with his brothers that inspired his acting career. “We lived in a house on a hill, far from neighbors—just us surrounded by nature,” he recalled, adding that this adventurous upbringing really shaped him.

Interestingly, Hemsworth’s first job wasn’t acting at all—it involved repairing breast pumps during his time with Fisher & Paykel, an Australian electronics company. He humorously described how he would clean and fix the pumps, saying, “I had to scrub all the formula off them with a toothbrush. That was quite the experience!”

His formal acting journey began in the early 2000s, with multiple small roles on Australian TV before gaining substantial acclaim for his role in the soap opera “Home and Away.”

The turning point came with “Cabin in the Woods.” Due to production delays, the film, although shot in 2009, was released after he had established himself as “Thor” in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. This role led to further appearances in major films like “The Avengers,” “Thor: The Dark World,” and more recently, “Thor: Love and Thunder.”

In 2024, Hemsworth is set to receive a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. In a heartfelt moment during his acceptance speech, he particularly thanked his wife. “I want to express my gratitude to my amazing wife who has been my rock,” he said, emphasizing her unwavering support throughout his career, even as she set aside her own pursuits.

“Honestly, nothing I do feels significant without you by my side. I love you,” he concluded.
