Search for Missing NMU Student Continues

Michigan State Police are actively searching for Trenton Massey, a student from Northern Michigan University, who has been missing since early Sunday morning. He was last spotted at a market, with a video showing him around 3:25 a.m. near East Baraga Avenue and Founders Landing Boardwalk.

According to police reports, Massey seemed “disoriented” and was struggling to walk. At the time of his disappearance, he was wearing an olive green and black jacket along with dark pants.

Authorities are urging local residents and businesses to review their surveillance footage from the time he was last seen, looking for any clues that might indicate his whereabouts. This includes checking vehicles, vacation homes, or any other properties they might own in the area.

The search has expanded to cover areas south of Washington Street, stretching from McClellan Avenue to the Lake Superior shoreline, and even further south to Furnas Street.

On Monday, in several feet of snow, hundreds of volunteers joined the search efforts. A fellow NMU student, Ryder Amesbury, shared that he met Massey at a bar on the night he went missing, adding a personal touch to the unfolding situation.

Amesbury expressed the fear surrounding the circumstances, noting it was a particularly harsh snowstorm that night. “I got lost on my way home,” he shared. “It’s really frightening to think about.”

Other community members, like Mauriah Smith from Indianapolis, have also stepped in to help. After spotting the search teams from her hotel, she felt compelled to assist.

One mother commented on the emotional toll of such a situation, admitting she couldn’t imagine her own child being missing and voiced a strong desire for everyone to contribute to the search.

The Marquette Police Department has indicated that the investigation is now back in full swing, incorporating specially trained and equipped investigators to aid in the search for the missing student.
