Christina Applegate’s Initial Hesitation for Iconic Role

Christina Applegate recently shared that she almost passed on her famous role as Kelly Bundy in “Married…With Children.” During an appearance on “Jimmy Kimmel Live,” host Jimmy Kimmel pointed out that she initially turned down the part.

Applegate recounted, “They wanted me to be Kelly Bundy, and I said, ‘Boo to your story.’ I really didn’t like it, felt it was pretty crude, almost like talking about something inappropriate. But then, they brought me back after trying out other kids, and somehow I found it funny.” Eventually, she accepted the role.

The show revolves around Al Bundy, a shoe salesman, his wife Peggy, and their kids, Kelly and Bud. It set new standards for primetime sitcoms with its edgy humor.

When Kimmel asked if any changes in the script influenced her decision, Applegate clarified that it wasn’t so much a rewrite as it was a shift in perspective.

Reflecting on the original cast, she remarked about how the initial pilot was lacking, as it ended up being “pretty bad.” Yet, Applegate noted, “It was so funny that I was totally into it,” referring to her co-star David Faustino, who played Bud.

Although she didn’t name the original actors who were cast as Bundy’s children, she did express that they weren’t up to par. “I know who they were, but mentioning it seems mean… They obviously didn’t work out, and I became really famous,” she laughed.

Applegate portrayed Kelly Bundy for over a decade, alongside Ed O’Neal, Katey Sagal, and Faustino. She reflected on how the cast still shares a strong bond after all these years.

When asked if this show made her feel part of something special, her answer was immediate. “Yeah, we’re very, very close. Incredibly close. I talk to Ed about once a week. We just catch up,” she shared, adding, “He calls me early, and we can chat for hours.” She expressed deep affection for him, emphasizing their strong connection.

“Married…With Children” ran for 11 seasons, breaking new ground with its unapologetic humor, all while being set in working-class Chicago.
