Snow Chaos in Long Island Town

During Monday’s snowstorm, a coastal town in Long Island saw a massive effort from local snowplow operators, who dedicated over 50 hours to clear one specific area.

“I’ve never experienced conditions this severe before,” shared Gershon Venegas, a contractor from Islip with over a decade of snow removal experience. Typically, he mentioned, it takes about 25 hours to clear out the Target parking lot after a big storm.

However, this time, he’s put in more than 50 hours already, with plenty of work still left to do.

The National Weather Service reported 31 inches of snow at Islip Airport, smashing the previous record of 27 inches set back in 2013.

“This is the heaviest snow I’ve ever seen in my 27 years,” said Catalina Rojo, a healthcare worker residing nearby.

She went on to describe the unusual sight: “Having snow up to your belly and towering over your dog is something you just don’t see every day.”

Yet, some residents with years of winter experience took it in stride. Mario Blanco, who was shoveling snow in boots and basketball shorts, remarked, “This is classic snow.” He didn’t seem fazed at all.

County officials indicated that teams were working non-stop to clear the extraordinary snow accumulations from local roads.

Suffolk County Executive Ed Romaine noted, “We faced historic snowfall and united to tackle this storm.” He expressed gratitude to residents for their patience as cleanup efforts continued.

By Monday afternoon, plows were still creating narrow pathways through a scene that resembled a ski resort more than a suburban area in Long Island.
