Disturbing footage captures masked individuals attacking a police car with an officer inside during a wild street takeover in Maryland.
The incident unfolded shortly after midnight on February 22 in Gaithersburg, Maryland, where drivers converged at the intersection of East West Highway and Connecticut Avenue. They blocked traffic completely and performed risky “doughnuts” while spectators watched from the road.
According to Montgomery County police, this chaotic scene started around 12:39 a.m. when a convoy of vehicles involved in the takeover was noticed heading toward the central business area of Silver Spring.
Police responded by closing off several intersections to try and manage the situation and keep the public safe.
However, despite these measures, many vehicles managed to enter the busy area, leading to its closure.
Dashcam footage revealed an individual standing in the road, actively blocking a police vehicle, while another driver kept spinning in circles on the street.
During the mayhem, two police cruisers were damaged, and images from the police department depicted shattered windows on the patrol cars.
In one instance, an officer was inside the car when both the back and windshield were broken, but thankfully no officers sustained injuries.
Maryland State Police arrived to help disperse the crowd and restore normal traffic conditions.
Earlier, before the convoy reached Montgomery County, three handguns were seized during a traffic stop related to the event by the Prince George’s County Police and Maryland State Police.
Authorities highlighted that street takeovers present significant dangers to both participants and nearby motorists.
The Second Precinct Investigations Unit of the Montgomery County Police Department is spearheading the inquiry and is seeking assistance from the public in identifying those involved.
