Schaefer Returns to U.S. After Commutation of Sentence
Tommy Schaefer, infamous for his role in the 2014 Suitcase Murders in Bali, has returned to the United States following his sentence being commuted and his subsequent deportation by the Indonesian government on Tuesday.
Now 32, Schaefer killed his girlfriend’s mother, Sheila von Wiese-Mack, during a luxury vacation and concealed her body in luggage. He faces federal charges related to conspiracy stemming from that murder, with a scheduled arraignment on Thursday at the Dirksen U.S. Courthouse in Chicago, as reported by the Chicago Tribune. A judge by the name of Matthew Kennelly will oversee the proceedings. Schaefer’s previous attorney, Thomas Durkin, passed away in 2025, and it’s unclear if he has secured new legal representation.
Prosecutors have consistently maintained that Schaefer and his girlfriend planned the murder to seize her $1.5 million inheritance. It’s said that Mack used her mother’s credit card to book Schaefer’s flight to Bali. Additionally, Schaefer’s cousin, Robert Bibbs, was involved by sending emails outlining the plan in exchange for a share of the anticipated estate. Bibbs spent nine years in federal prison due to his involvement.
Originally, Indonesian officials sentenced Schaefer to 18 years for the calculated murder of the 62-year-old socialite, as reported by the Associated Press. Von Wiese-Mack’s body was discovered stuffed in luggage in a taxi outside a Bali resort in August 2014.
Kerobokan Prison’s Warden Hudi Ismono informed journalist Andrea Dixon that Schaefer had his sentence reduced by a total of 75 months and 120 days. Such reductions are not uncommon in Indonesia, often granted during public holidays and religious events.
Schaefer’s ex-girlfriend, Heather Mack, who also served time in Bali before being brought back to the U.S. in 2021, is already aware of the potential consequences awaiting him. After her return, federal agents detained her at O’Hare International Airport. Mack eventually pleaded guilty to conspiracy charges, receiving a 26-year sentence as reported by CBS News.
