U.N. Leader Guterres Calls for an Immediate and Unconditional Ceasefire in Ukraine

UN Calls for Ceasefire in Ukraine

On Monday, UN Secretary-General António Guterres urged for an immediate ceasefire in Ukraine, labeling the ongoing conflict a “stain on our collective conscience.” His comments came during a Security Council meeting that commemorated the fourth anniversary of Russia’s invasion, where he emphasized the necessity for a peace agreement that international organizations can monitor, especially as they seem to be sidelined lately.

Speaking through U.N. Under-Secretary-General for Peacebuilding Rosemary Di Carlo, Guterres acknowledged efforts by the United States and other nations to bring an end to the conflict. However, he stressed the need for tangible actions to de-escalate tensions and pave the way for diplomatic efforts. “The cascading consequences of this blatant violation of international law have been evident,” he remarked.

The seasoned politician from Portugal pointed out the direct risks the fighting poses to the safety of Ukraine’s nuclear facilities, declaring, “This unconscionable nuclear roulette game must be stopped immediately.”

“Enough of death. Enough of destruction. Enough of broken lives and shattered futures,” he continued. “The time has come for an immediate, complete and unconditional ceasefire. This is the first step towards a just peace that will save lives and alleviate suffering.”

Looking ahead, Guterres envisions the United Nations playing a crucial role in future negotiations, stressing that these efforts should align with the UN Charter, adhere to international law, and respect Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.

He concluded by stating, “The United Nations remains ready to contribute to all efforts towards this objective.”

Previously, Guterres had attempted to position himself as a mediator between Russia and Ukraine earlier this year, reaching out for a ceasefire and personal involvement in the discussions. Unfortunately, both parties showed little interest in his overtures, largely ignoring him and the international organizations he represents.
