Human Remains Found in Search for Missing Florida Mother

Over two decades after a Florida mother vanished, divers have made a significant discovery, uncovering both human remains and her submerged vehicle in a local waterway.

The Flagler County Sheriff’s Office has reported the recovery of a red 1996 Plymouth Neon, along with clothing, children’s toys, a Florida driver’s license, and remains believed to belong to Mary Lou Combs of Palm Coast.

Combs was last seen on August 19, 2003, leaving the home she shared with her mother and three children. She never returned, which alarmed her family, especially when she missed her daughter’s birthday party shortly after. While she had a history of disappearing, it was out of character for her to skip such important events for her children.

Interestingly, she didn’t collect her last paycheck from her job at a local grocery store, Food Lion. For years, search efforts and tip investigations yielded no significant clues, leaving her family in a state of uncertainty.

Things took a turn in October 2025, when a volunteer dive team discovered what looked like a bumper belonging to Combs’ missing car in the Intracoastal Waterway. The vehicle was later located upside down in a muddy depth of about 14 to 17 feet.

A recovery operation began on February 3, involving the FBI’s Underwater Search Evidence Response Team, among other agencies. Divers accessed the vehicle and used dredging equipment to pull out various contents. They retrieved items like a handle inscribed with “neon,” a manual window crank, a floor mat, and shoes that matched Combs’ size, as well as toys and a child seat.

Along with these items, investigators found human bones and a metal plate likely associated with Combs’ ankle surgery, raising hopes of confirming her identity through medical records.

Sheriff Rick Staley expressed optimism that the relentless efforts of detectives would finally bring answers to Combs’ family, offering them some semblance of closure. “While this isn’t the resolution we all hoped for, given the elapsed time, the possibility of finding her alive was quite slim,” he stated.

Despite lingering rumors suggesting foul play, current evidence points toward the possibility that Combs might have accidentally driven into the waterway and drowned. Her remains are now with the medical examiner as DNA tests are being conducted to establish her identity and determine the cause of death.
