Pete Alonso Tries to Win Over John Oliver’s Son

Pete Alonso is making an effort to turn John Oliver’s son into an Orioles fan.

This week, Oliver appeared on “Late Night with Seth Meyers” and shared how his 8-year-old son became interested in baseball last year, leading him to support the Mets.

As the host of HBO’s “Last Week Tonight,” Oliver expressed his disappointment for the team. He recounted the moment his son experienced the ups and downs of being a Mets fan, particularly when Alonso left to join the Orioles during the offseason.

Currently, Alonso is encouraging Oliver and his son to become Orioles fans, inviting them to Camden Yards for a game. He recently signed a five-year, $155 million contract, and spoke directly to Oliver’s family in a video released on the team’s social media.

“I know my son was upset about my signing with the Orioles, but he can always be an O’s fan,” Alonso said. “I’d love to invite you and your family to Camden Yards this year. You’ll even have the chance to go out on the field for batting practice. I really hope you can come and enjoy it. Looking forward to seeing you soon. Go O’s!”

Oliver mentioned that his son had previously asked if he could change his baseball loyalty at the start of the 2025 season. Oliver seemed reluctant about that.

“I’m watching my son fall in love with Alonso—he has an autographed ball from him,” Oliver said. “I had to go into his room to break the news that Pete is going to Baltimore, and he asked, ‘Are you sure I can’t be an Orioles fan?’ We’ve had a little talk about it,” he added.

Despite Alonso’s warm invitation, Oliver hasn’t taken him up on it. The comedian, his son, and the rest of the Mets will only see Alonso when the Orioles come to Queens in September for a series at Citi Field.
