Missing North Carolina Mother Found After Two Decades
Michelle Lynn Handley Smith, a North Carolina woman who disappeared over 20 years ago, has been discovered alive. Her daughter shared that her mother’s marriage was tumultuous and marked by alcohol struggles.
Smith vanished in December 2001 after telling her family she was going Christmas shopping in Virginia. The now 62-year-old was located in North Carolina on February 20 when detectives received new leads regarding her case.
In a 2018 discussion on The Vanished Podcast, her daughter Amanda Hundley described the deterioration of Smith’s marriage, highlighting issues like alcohol abuse and infidelity. Smith, then 38, left home and never returned. For years, Hundley presumed her mother had just walked away.
Hundley revealed that her mother had recently lost a job at a veterinary clinic due to drinking on the job. She mentioned that while her father suspected Smith’s drinking, he didn’t fully understand its extent until after she disappeared. “He showed me where she kept the bottles,” Hundley recalled. “There were a lot of empty rum bottles.” She was just 14 at the time.
The couple’s relationship had also taken a toll, with Hundley noting there were arguments that occasionally turned physical. Despite these claims, Rockingham County Sheriff Sam Page stated there was no official record of domestic violence between Smith and her husband.
In the months leading up to her disappearance, things had changed at home. The couple stopped sharing a bed, and Smith often chose to sleep in a chair while her husband stayed in the bedroom. “If she wanted to break up with my dad, that’s one thing, but I didn’t think she’d leave us,” Hundley said during the 2018 podcast episode.
Upon being found, Smith told police she had separated from her family due to domestic matters and had left voluntarily. Sheriff Page confirmed she was safe and was working with the District Attorney’s Office, indicating no charges would be filed.
Hundley expressed a mix of relief and turmoil in a Facebook post, describing the last two days as “a whirlwind of emotions.” She requested respect and privacy for her family, noting her father’s struggle with accusations over the years. “While their marriage had problems, my mom didn’t just leave due to that. It’s important to remember that my father was innocent,” she stated.
