During a Senate hearing on Tuesday, an intense exchange took place between Independent Senator Bernie Sanders and Republican Senator Markwayne Mullin, sparking a flurry of responses on social media.
Mullin addressed the committee, expressing frustration: “Everyone here is facing criticism for attempting to enact change.” This hearing focused on issues related to Obamacare amidst Casey Means’ nomination for Surgeon General.
“God forbid we try to repair a dysfunctional system,” Mullin said, before noting he might have gone on too long.
As Mullin attempted to steer the conversation back, Sanders interjected dismissively, “Yeah, yeah.” Mullin retorted, “I didn’t ask for your input. If I valued your opinion, I’d have asked, but I don’t. You’ve been entrenched in this system—part of the problem—longer than I’ve even been around. Why haven’t you resolved these issues?”
In a sarcastic tone, Sanders replied, “I’ve decided not to pursue the Surgeon General role. You’re clearly the one for that job.” Mullin rejected this comment, insisting it wouldn’t be acceptable.
This back-and-forth quickly gained traction online, with conservative voices reacting. Andrew Corbett noted that Mullin’s remarks were a “cheap shot,” while comedian Tim Young emphasized that Sanders has been in his position long enough to have addressed these longstanding issues.
Journalist Anna Matson chimed in, expressing frustration that Sanders, who has been in office for decades, has shown little progress. Political commentator Dan Dakich and conservative journalist Eric Daughterty also weighed in, commenting on the confrontation.
Amid increasing tension between Sanders and Mullin in recent years, this incident followed another clash regarding healthcare reform in December, where Mullin labeled Sanders as the “Grinch” for opposing a bipartisan health bill aimed at supporting children with cancer.
Both Senators’ offices have been contacted for comments on this latest incident.
