Kansas cancels licenses for transgender drivers

A transgender driver in Kansas has lost their license following a recent state law that came into effect on Thursday. This legislation mandates that individuals must align their gender identity on official documents with the sex assigned to them at birth.

The state Department of Revenue sent out notifications to approximately 1,700 drivers after the Republican supermajority in the Legislature approved a resolution to enforce this requirement.

State officials stated, “Please note that Congress does not provide a grace period for recertification.”

“This means that once the law is formally enacted, your current qualification will immediately become invalid and driving a vehicle without a valid qualification may result in additional penalties,” they added.

Democratic Governor Laura Kelly vetoed the measure, though Republican lawmakers swiftly overrode her veto last week.

LGBTQ advocate Jay Moyer expressed concern, saying, “Everything is happening so fast and my heart breaks for the people this is directly impacting.”

A member of the Johnson County Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Coalition voiced frustration with the law, stating, “This bill, which Republicans passed through the Legislature so quickly, does nothing but create problems that don’t exist.”

On the other hand, Republican Senate Majority Leader Chase Blasey argued that President Trump’s election in 2024 reflects voters’ desire for a “return to common sense.”

Blasey insisted, “Back home, people believe there are only two genders: male and female,” referencing what he called the “basics of biology.”

The Department of Revenue explained that if a transgender driver opts to waive their current status, a new card would be issued in line with statutory requirements.

This new law is part of a broader trend among Kansas Republicans to address issues related to transgender individuals, including limitations on restroom and locker room access for transgender people.
