Tommy Robinson Critiques Media Coverage During U.S. Visit
Tommy Robinson, the British street organizer and citizen journalist, has harshly criticized mainstream media for their unfavorable reporting on his recent trip to Washington, D.C. He claims their influence has diminished significantly.
Robinson, who founded the now-defunct British Defense League, has made a name for himself by producing documentaries and campaigning against the mass sexual exploitation of young British girls by gangs of immigrants.
During his visit to the U.S., he encountered challenges due to his controversial background, which includes run-ins with British law enforcement and courts. Just months prior, he was acquitted of terrorism charges after refusing to hand over his cell phone to police, with the judge dismissing the case over police mistakes.
While in Washington, Robinson was hosted by Joe Rittenhouse, a State Department advisor in charge of visa matters. Rittenhouse has previously been involved in visa revocations for individuals deemed politically undesirable. He welcomed Robinson, expressing admiration for him as a “free speech fighter,” stating that promoting free speech is vital for the betterment of the world.
Congressman Randy Fine (R-FL) also met with Robinson, where they discussed his legal efforts to protect dog ownership from perceived threats of Sharia law, which he has long argued is infiltrating Western societies. Fine reflected on how U.S. citizens are often perplexed by the UK’s laws regarding free speech.
“Americans are concerned that someone could be arrested for expressing opinions online, which feels very foreign here. I’m Jewish, and if people protest outside my office with offensive signs, well, I find that foolish, but it’s their right. The notion of being jailed for hurtful opinions undermines what it means to be American.”
“We’re accustomed to protests here, and that shapes our perception of free speech in other countries, including Britain.”
Robinson stated that his aim during this trip was to forge alliances and friendships, mentioning plans to head to Florida following his time in the capital.
His visit generated alarm among British media, especially regarding his connections with individuals tied to former President Donald Trump’s administration. Robinson commented, “Traditional media is scrambling to denounce my visit and is upset that their long-standing smear campaign has been exposed. Their power is fading.”
Additionally, Robinson’s family has had to leave the UK due to threats from Islamic State publications, highlighting the dangers they faced. She reported that police warned her against engaging with extremist content, even though threats against their safety were prevalent.
In the UK, possessing a weapon for self-defense, including pepper spray, is illegal, reflecting the serious limitations on personal protection.
