DeVonta Lee, a former wide receiver for LSU and Louisiana Tech, has died at the age of 26 after a struggle with cancer.

He played for the Tigers for three seasons, helping the team clinch a national championship in 2019 before transferring to Louisiana Tech in 2022.

Lee’s mother, Lacrecia Brown, shared with the media that he was a “fighter” and “beloved by all.” She described him as a dedicated player who would “do anything for anyone.” He was known for his enthusiasm and commitment to exercise daily, always giving his best.

During his time at LSU, Lee recorded 11 catches for 112 yards and a touchdown. At Louisiana Tech, he added two catches for 17 yards. LSU acknowledged his passing, stating, “The LSU football family mourns the loss of former Tiger DeVonta Lee,” expressing condolences to his family, friends, and teammates. Louisiana Tech also expressed sadness over his death, honoring him as a part of the Bulldog family.

Following his transfer, Lee experienced severe back pain and was diagnosed with osteosarcoma, a form of bone cancer. He underwent multiple procedures, ten weeks of chemotherapy, and seven weeks of radiation treatment, ultimately being declared cancer-free after a year.

He made a return to football at Louisiana Tech in 2024, though he didn’t participate in any games and was listed as a redshirt senior. Louisiana Tech’s head coach, Sonny Cumby, praised Lee’s “fighter’s mentality,” noting that overcoming such significant challenges was unsurprising for him. Cumby referenced the hard journey ahead for Lee as he prepared to play college football again, saying, “If anyone can do that, it’s D-Lee.”
