Jorge Polanco fully embracing his first base trial with the Mets

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. — Jorge Polanco, who’s transitioning to first base, is feeling the pressure as Opening Day approaches—less than a month away.

The experienced infielder participated in a mock game at Clover Park in Port St. Lucie, making strides in adapting to the Mets’ infield situation that’s heavily populated with shortstops.

“It felt a bit different initially,” Polanco admitted.

That’s to be expected, given that the Mets are taking a chance with Polanco in this new role, likely with less experienced players like Mark Vientos and Brett Batty backing him up.

Vientos played first base in a game against Houston at Palm Beach Ballpark, making a couple of solid plays. Batty, recovering from a hamstring issue, has participated in mock games and is anticipated to play first base in an upcoming Grapefruit League game.

Polanco, who manager Carlos Mendoza plans to use as a designated hitter, has consulted with Carlos Santana for guidance on adjusting to first base. He shared that Santana emphasized the mental hurdles and the nuanced responsibilities that differ from what he was used to as a middle infielder.

Polanco noted that the most challenging decisions involve plays, like whether to go after a ball hit to right field or allow the second baseman to handle it.

“I just need to give it a shot,” Polanco stated, echoing sentiments from Ron Washington. “Right now is a great time to prepare.”

Tyrone Taylor, previously not in the spotlight as Luis Robert Jr. claimed center field and Carson Benge drew attention in right, hit a three-run homer after starting in center. Luis Torrence added two hits during the game.

With Francisco Lindor sidelined due to a fractured hamate bone in his left hand, Ronnie Mauricio took the shortstop position on Thursday. Marcus Semien remarked on how impressed he was with Mauricio’s communication in the infield.
