Nets overwhelmed by fiery Spurs in their latest step toward rebuilding

San Antonio’s Transformation: From Worst to First

Two years back, San Antonio was sitting at the bottom of the Western Conference standings. Now, they’ve completely flipped the script and emerged as the hottest team in the NBA.

During a recent matchup, the Nets looked to get some inspiration from the Spurs’ impressive play. However, Brooklyn fell to San Antonio, 126-110, in front of a sold-out audience of 17,548 at Barclays Center on Thursday, underscoring their ongoing struggles. This loss pushes the Nets closer to needing a significant player to help turn their season around.

Victor Wembanyama stood out, contributing significantly with 12 points, 8 rebounds, 5 assists, 2 steals, and 2 blocks. Meanwhile, Julien Champagnie made a notable impact, scoring a game-high 26 points, with the Spurs finishing the third quarter with seven players in double figures, clearly outplaying Brooklyn.

Michael Porter Jr. led the Nets with 25 points and 14 rebounds, but the team fell behind by as much as 26 points, revealing a gap in performance compared to San Antonio.

Coach Jordi Fernandes acknowledged the importance of both winning and remaining competitive. “It’s crucial to recognize our records, and, sure, we aren’t happy about them. Yet, the players show up to work hard every day,” he said.

He went on to emphasize the need for competitiveness: “If we’re 10 points ahead, we should aim to be 20 ahead. If we’re down by 20, we should strive to close that gap. It’s a gradual process.” This process is vital for securing favorable lottery odds for upcoming drafts.

Currently, Brooklyn (15-43) is in third place in the lottery standings, three games behind Sacramento and just one behind Indiana.

The Nets staged a brief comeback with a 17-4 run towards the end of the first quarter, but they soon lost momentum.

Danny Wolff added 14 points off the bench, while rookie Egor Demin set a career-high with nine assists, and fellow rookie Nolan Traore scored 13 points.

Spurs coach Mitch Johnson, who stepped in for Gregg Popovich last season, shared insights about nurturing young talent. He noted the challenge of having multiple young players growing together, stating, “It’s like teaching kids to swim—it’s tough to ensure they all stay afloat.” He highlighted the importance of patience as these young athletes navigate their development in the league.

“Seeing players with character who give their best is extremely rewarding. Jordi has done a fantastic job, and it’s evident in the competition,” Johnson added.

No injuries were reported for the Nets, and Josh Minott made his debut following a trade but finished without scoring in his five minutes on the court.
