Bregman Shares New Chapter with Cubs
Alex Bregman recently made quite the statement about his fresh start with the Cubs, choosing to highlight some Boston connections.
The former third baseman for the Red Sox, who left the team under contentious circumstances, shared a photograph featuring Rafael Devers—another former Boston player who also had a rocky exit.
He captioned a collage of eight images with “Baseball time ⚾️🌵💪,” which notably included just one solo shot with an MLB star.
Bregman and Devers were initially seen as key figures for Boston’s infield, but both ended up moving to the National League following their departures.
Devers had signed the largest contract in the franchise’s history, yet Bregman soon followed with a three-year, $120 million deal that included two opt-out options for 2025.
Unfortunately, things soured, leading to a trade for Devers. The fallout included harsh words from both sides.
While Bregman appeared to be a suitable long-term replacement for Devers, free agency negotiations didn’t go smoothly, and ultimately, he signed a five-year, $175 million contract with the Cubs.
There was some drama tied to the exit, too. Former Red Sox catcher AJ Pierzynski mentioned that Bregman felt frustrated due to the negotiations stalling. “Alex was a little upset that they weren’t moving,” Pierzynski noted, referring to the Red Sox’s rigid stance. “So they just said, ‘Take it or leave it.'” They didn’t budge.
Boston did eventually enhance their offer to five years and $165 million, but by then, the situation had already deteriorated, leading to Bregman’s move to Chicago.
Pierzynski remarked that Bregman received better offers elsewhere and chose the Cubs for the short-term financial gain.
The Red Sox were displeased with Bregman’s departure, with team president Sam Kennedy attributing the situation to him. He stated, “If Alex Bregman wanted to be here, he would’ve stayed.” Kennedy added, “Eventually he’ll be here.”
However, Bregman seemed to have different plans, and in light of this whole situation, the saying “a picture is worth a thousand words” feels quite fitting.
Now, Bregman will focus on helping the Cubs contend against the Brewers in the National League Central Division, while Boston has traded for former Yankee Caleb Durbin to fill their void at third base.
