Residents Frustrated by Long Waits for Street Light Repairs in Los Angeles

Feelings of frustration are growing among Los Angeles residents as they confront an astonishing wait time of 270 days for street light repairs.

The city is currently grappling with around 33,000 repair requests, leaving several neighborhoods in complete darkness for nearly a year, as reported by local outlets.

A reporter from FOX 11, Matthew Seedorf, recently shared an automated reply from the city’s 311 help line, shedding light on the situation.

“Major repairs have been delayed because of theft and vandalism,” the response states, indicating a nine-month wait time for these issues to be addressed.

It’s alarming to note that the “theft epidemic” has escalated so much that theft of copper wiring constitutes nearly 40% of all power outages. Thieves are removing miles of wiring from city infrastructure at a pace that workers just can’t keep up with.

Infrastructure shortcomings have emerged as a key issue in the upcoming 2026 mayoral election. City Councilor Nitya Raman, who has challenged current Mayor Karen Bass, views these outages as a sign of systemic mismanagement.

Raman, with a background in urban planning, emphasizes that the city’s failure to maintain its streets constitutes a public safety crisis. For his campaign, addressing “basic problems” has become a top priority.

In an effort to tackle this pressing issue, the City Council has introduced a $65 million initiative aimed at converting over 60,000 street lights to solar power in theft-prone areas. This could help circumvent the need for copper wiring. However, it’s worth noting that the Street Lighting Authority remains heavily under-resourced, with just 185 field workers assigned to manage more than 220,000 street lights across the city.
