Behind KTLA's job cuts as sources disclose harsh realities

Fear has become palpable among KTLA staff following the dismissal of several prominent on-air figures.

This week, the station let go of anchors Elina Abovian, Glenn Walker, Lou Parker, long-time meteorologist Mark Kliski, and weather anchor Casey Montoya.

The layoffs appear to be linked to Nexstar Media Group’s efforts to finalize its acquisition of Tegna, a media company based in Virginia. One remaining staff member expressed that the entire experience felt “sickening,” comparing it to the loss of friends.

“Those who had to fill the void left by those laid off are feeling uncomfortable,” they noted.

Insiders described how abruptly the firings happened; Abovian was reportedly let go right after finishing an on-air segment at LAX. She shared on Instagram that she was dismissed on her 40th birthday, after working with the station for 11 years.

Another source claimed Montoya received the news of his termination via phone while he was home sick.

One employee mentioned, “Those who have higher salaries seem to be targeted.”

They’re replacing seasoned professionals with younger reporters, many of whom are still living with their parents. It feels like everyone is either trying to find a way to stay afloat or feeling, well, a bit blindsided.

Frank Buckley, another KTLA anchor, expressed his sympathies on-air, acknowledging the losses and noting the emotional impact on the team. He said, “We may not be able to say much, but it weighs heavily on all of us.”

He further added, “These are tough times for us, yet we will get through this as a team.” Still, he emphasized the responsibility of delivering the news while empathizing with affected colleagues.

News Director Erica Hill Rodriguez addressed the situation in a memo shared with the staff, stating she couldn’t divulge sensitive details at this stage, but would do so when appropriate. She described the period as “incredibly tough” and sent thoughts to the entire team as they navigate through this challenging time.

However, the lack of formal goodbyes from executives has led to backlash and anger from fans on social media.
