Chet Hanks stuck in Colombia without a US passport

Chet Hanks, son of Tom Hanks, is currently in a bit of a bind in Colombia.

“Are you ready for story time?” Chet asked in a recent video. He mentioned a trip to Puerto Rico for “Max’s birthday party back home” and noted how much fun he had there.

The actor, known for “Running Point,” took a detour to Medellin to catch up with a friend named Taylor.

“Isn’t that great?” he exclaimed to his viewers. “Let’s check this out.”

Chet, sporting a black Dodgers cap and a chunky chain, then revealed some unexpected complications with his travel plans.

“I’m a dual citizen, so I’m using my Greek passport,” he explained, pointing out that his U.S. passport was on the verge of expiration. “Even if it’s not expired, you could still face entry issues.”

He continued, “I’m heading to the airport for a flight that was three hours early.”

“This is an international trip. I was told I’d need a green card to get back to the U.S. if I’m traveling on a foreign passport,” he said.

“Set me free,” he joked, expressing his frustration.

Chet noted, somewhat incredulously, “I’m literally trapped in Colombia. I’m trapped in Medellin,” because he doesn’t have a green card. He added that while he acknowledges there are worse places to be stuck, he felt quite lost about what to do next. The only embassy that could assist him is located in Bogotá.

“I really don’t want to go to Bogotá,” he stated, which is just an hour’s flight away from Medellin. “I just want to be free.”

Despite reaching out for comments, Chet’s representatives hadn’t responded yet.

His followers had plenty to say, with some offering suggestions, humor, and sympathy. One user commented they should have someone in his family quickly send over his passport, while another humorously referred to a dramatic scene from “Cast Away.”

Others found humor in his green card dilemma, with one user sharing a laugh about him being a citizen without a green card.

At 35, Chet seems to be making the best of the situation. Recently, he shared clips from a lively dance club filled with energetic party-goers.

As the eldest son of Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson, Chet has been open about his past struggles with substance use and celebrated two years of sobriety in 2024. While it appears his father hasn’t yet managed to assist him with these travel issues, Tom has previously offered him some advice on acting that Chet shared, emphasizing punctuality and kindness as keys to success in the industry.
