Hallmark Channel’s Closing Lovetuary Film
Hallmark Channel wraps up its Lovetuary season with a new movie set in New Mexico titled Hope Ranch Romance. The film stars Alison Sweeney as Hope Morgan, a single mother who takes a leap of faith by moving to Ruidoso, New Mexico, to fulfill her dream of running a ranch. As she tries to revive a cherished local event, her life takes an unexpected turn when her ex-boyfriend, Jack Bennett (Gabriel Hogan), returns, complicating her plans. Is it worth your time? Let’s find out!
Overview: Hope Morgan (Sweeney) faces a big change as she sends her daughter Maggie (Megan Sweeney) off to college for the first time. Determined to start fresh, she leaves behind her life in Denver to buy a ranch in Ruidoso, which used to host the popular Giddy Up Gala. Hope has fond childhood memories of the event, attended with her grandparents, and now she wishes to bring it back after it was paused following the ranch’s sale a few years back. But, can she manage this ambitious endeavor on her own, especially considering her limited resources?
Fortuitously, her neighbor, Tom Grayson (Scott Martin), introduces himself and offers his help. Initially, Hope is hesitant to accept assistance, but as the tasks pile up, she realizes she can’t handle everything alone—inspections, alterations, decorations—it all becomes overwhelming. To make matters worse, Jack, her ex and the brother of her best friend Lori (Stephanie Beran), arrives in town, intent on rekindling their romance and establishing a horse supply store.
Although Hope feels conflicted about getting back together with Jack, considering their complicated history and a significant gap of ten years since they last communicated, her focus remains on the gala. With time ticking away and help from Tom, Jack, Lori, and even the Mayor of Ruidoso, Winona (Dodie Montgomery), on the table, Hope must learn to let others in to achieve both her goals and personal happiness.
Familiar Vibes: You might think of other romantic films that take place on a ranch, like Ranch Romance or Love in Paradise, when watching this. The setting adds a certain charm.
Standout Performance: I have to say, Alison Sweeney really goes for it. She rides horses, chases chickens, and enthusiastically mentions “dizzy gala” numerous times. Her dedication makes her portrayal utterly engaging and drives the story.
Notable Quote: Jack tells Hope, “I know moving to an ex-girlfriend’s new town or buying her business just to try and win her back can be a little, um, loose. But I’m serious about this, Hope.” It’s a bit much, and while I might choose a different word than “loose,” it’s good he’s aware of his situation.
Content Rating: There’s literally nothing in the way of adult content.
Final Thoughts: I’m a bit torn about Hope Ranch Romance. Initially, I found Jack’s move to Ruidoso—essentially to win back someone he hadn’t spoken to in a decade—quite unsettling. I wasn’t rooting for them at first. However, as the film unfolded, the chemistry between Sweeney and Hogan gradually drew me in. While the plot and character arcs are somewhat predictable, it’s the beautiful New Mexico backdrop and Sweeney’s hopeful journey that kept me watching. Yes, the theme of needing help might be a bit on-the-nose, but we don’t really watch Hallmark movies for deep complexities. Ultimately, it’s light-hearted fun—not perfect, but enjoyable nonetheless.
Recommendation: Hope Ranch Romance may lack in intricate storytelling, yet its stunning scenery and heartfelt performances make it a pleasant watch for Hallmark fans. If you’re inclined towards feel-good flicks, this one might just be right up your alley.
