Democrats Criticize Trump Over Iran Operation
Democratic lawmakers have voiced their concerns regarding President Donald Trump’s recent actions in Iran, specifically referencing Operation Epic Fury.
Among those condemning the nighttime military strike were House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.), Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.), Senator Mark Warner (D-Va.), and Representative Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.).
Jeffries remarked, “Donald Trump promised to steer America away from endless, costly foreign wars. He is now doing just the opposite in the Middle East. Congress must immediately vote on the War Powers Resolution,” in a social media update.
In a separate social media post, Schumer stated, “Iran should never be allowed to acquire nuclear weapons, but with so many problems at home, the American people do not want another endless and costly war in the Middle East. The administration has not provided Congress and the American people with essential details about the threat’s scope and immediacy. Confronting Iran’s troubling activities, nuclear ambitions, and repression of its citizens needs American strength and regional coordination. Unfortunately, President Trump’s reactive approach risks escalating the conflict.”
Warned by Warner in a video, he questioned the rationale behind the strike, suggesting it might push the U.S. into another “forever war in the Middle East.”
Omar criticized the president for leading the nation into what she called an illegal and unjust war, acting “without Congressional authorization, with no clear purpose, and with no imminent threat to the United States.” She described it as “a reckless abuse of power that puts both innocent civilians and American lives at risk for a conflict that the American people do not want.”
On a different note, Senator John Fetterman (D-Pennsylvania) supported the military action, arguing that “negotiations never worked” with Iran and that “sometimes you have to take action to create peace.”
However, Republican Representative Thomas Massie (R-Ky.), a longtime critic of Trump, expressed his frustration that the president did not seek Congressional approval, despite meeting with the Gang of Eight, a group of lawmakers briefed on secret issues earlier that week.
Reports suggest that U.S. military operations, in coordination with Israel, are targeting military sites and missile bases posing an “imminent threat.”
President Trump warned Iran’s military to lay down their weapons or face “certain death.” As the strikes commenced in Tehran, he urged Iranians to “take control of their own destiny.”
In January, as Iran’s crackdown on dissent escalated, families were desperately searching for loved ones, with over 10,000 arrests and ongoing executions. Trump had halted all meetings with Iranian officials, declaring that “help is on the way,” and warned that those involved in the regime’s violence “will pay a heavy price.”
Furthermore, the U.S. has urged Americans to leave Iran, with the president calling for protesters to “take over their institutions” in opposition to the oppressive regime.
