Legal Actions in Texas Emerge After Illegal Disposal of Renewable Energy Wind Blades

Concerns Over Wind Turbine Blade Dumping in Sweetwater, Texas

A troubling situation has emerged in Sweetwater, Texas, where it’s alleged that over 3,000 large wind turbine blades were illegally discarded. In early February, the Texas Attorney General’s Office initiated a civil lawsuit against those believed to be involved.

Four unnamed individuals are facing criminal charges as part of the investigation into this dumping incident.

On February 19, officials from Sweetwater Police, the Nolan County District Attorney’s Office, along with city representatives, gathered for a press conference at a site where the discarded turbine blades were found. They reported that the blades had been accumulating for years without any serious attempts at cleanup by the individuals responsible.

According to KTXS News, the criminal inquiry into the blade dumping has led to charges against four unnamed individuals. During the press conference, Sweetwater Police Chief Brian Sheridan noted that these charges resulted from efforts by the Sweetwater Police Department, collaborating with Nolan County and various state agencies.

Sweetwater Police Chief Corey Stroman characterized the ongoing investigation as a “unique case” and highlighted it as part of a broader initiative being prosecuted in 32 states, including Texas.

On Tuesday, Texas Land Commissioner Dawn Buckingham addressed the issue on social media, remarking, “Thousands of wind turbine blades have been dumped near Sweetwater, and Texans are still waiting for those responsible to clean up the trash. This is exactly what happens when outside companies treat rural Texas like a landfill.”

She further emphasized the importance of holding polluters accountable, stating, “Texas is not a dump.”

As the criminal proceedings unfold against the four unidentified defendants, the company implicated in the mass dumping is also facing a civil lawsuit from the state of Texas. This lawsuit, filed by the Texas Attorney General’s Office, aims to impose substantial civil penalties for ongoing alleged infractions and seeks immediate action for the safe removal and proper disposal of the abandoned turbine blades at two different locations near Sweetwater.

The lawsuit identifies Global Fiberglass Solutions of Texas LLC, VO Dynasty LLC, Donald Lilly, Global Fiberglass Solutions Inc., and GFSI-MHE Manufacturing of Texas LLC as defendants. Attorney General Ken Paxton reported that Global Fiberglass Solutions was contracted by several companies to dismantle the large blades—each over 200 feet long—and transport them for recycling. However, Paxton accuses the company of failing to dispose of the blades correctly, instead stockpiling more than 3,000 blades across two sites in violation of the Texas Solid Waste Disposal Act and other regulations.

“Illegal disposal of wind turbines is damaging our land and will never be tolerated on my watch. Just because the radical left calls something a ‘green industry’ does not give any company a free pass to harm rural Texas, break laws, and leave it to Texans to address the negative impacts,” Paxton remarked.
