Islanders Continue Overtime Success
In Columbus, Ohio, the Islanders are on a bit of a roll lately. They’re not only managing to collect points effectively, but they’ve also become quite good at overtime games. Interestingly, they’ve managed to stay undefeated all season in games that end in overtime, which is a notable improvement compared to previous seasons.
Just recently, the Islanders secured a thrilling 4-3 victory over the Blue Jackets, marking their eighth win in matches that were decided by overtime goals. However, the team has faced challenges in the shootout, losing five times. It’s a striking contrast to just two seasons ago when they faced a tough stretch, losing 16 games in overtime and shootouts combined.
Bo Horvat expressed some satisfaction with the team’s puck possession ahead of their success against the Blue Jackets, mentioning their solid three-on-three game structure. He noted that players are adhering well to their defensive assignments. After all, a good time of possession can often sway the game in your favor.
The Islanders could have easily lost the opening draw against the Blue Jackets; however, they quickly regained control of the puck and established dominance over the ice. In fact, they managed to keep the puck away from Columbus for much of that overtime period.
Simon Holmstrom, who scored the decisive goal, remarked on the unpredictability of overtime. He noted that the game can always go either way, but the key lies in puck possession and making timely plays. It’s about wearing down the opponent and creating chances—something the Islanders seem to have mastered this season.
While Coach Patrick Roy had some commentary on the game, he refrained from challenging a call that involved potential goaltender interference on a goal scored by Jean-Gabriel Pageau. There seemed to be some uncertainty regarding the contact zone around the crease, which led to his decision to hold back on challenging the play.
In net, Ilya Sorokin was quite effective, stopping 27 of 30 shots throughout the game, while Jett Greaves faced 26 shots but only managed to stop 22. Looking ahead, it sounds like David Rittich may have the opportunity to start in the upcoming game against the Panthers.
One unexpected note is that Kent Johnson sat out as a healthy scratch for the Blue Jackets, raising a few eyebrows among fans.
