Troy Snitker Takes the Helm as Mets’ Hitting Coach
Troy Snitker, having served as the Astros’ hitting coach for seven years, is transitioning to a new role with the Mets. His career, however, has largely been linked with the Braves, where his father, Brian Snitker, had an impactful managerial career. Brian took the reins in Atlanta back in 2016.
“My dad really shaped my approach to the game,” Troy reflected. Brian started his journey with the Braves as a player in 1977 and stayed on with the organization after his playing days ended in 1980.
On Sunday at Clover Park, Troy shared fond memories: “I spent time in the dugout with him. Just watching how he managed, interacted with players and staff—it was quite the experience.”
Growing up in Snellville, right outside Atlanta, Troy often accompanied his family on trips to minor league towns to see his dad. “I remember packing up every summer or spring break,” he noted. “My mom would load the minivan and we’d set out for the next adventure.” It’s almost amusing when you think about it—the motels and changing apartments, yet they never moved.
Troy’s own baseball journey included two years in the Braves’ system after being drafted in the 19th round, eventually leading him to join his father as a coach in the majors.
Their story hit a remarkable high in 2021 when Brian led the Braves to victory in the World Series against the Astros. Troy acknowledged, “Watching him achieve that on such a grand stage, it was heartwarming. The entire family felt this pride that was so genuine.”
After winning a title with the Astros in 2022, Troy is now tasked with revitalizing the Mets’ offense. He’s taken over from Eric Chavez and Jeremy Barnes, teaming up with Jeff Albert, who serves as the director of major league hitting.
As Troy puts it, “We want everyone to pull together, just like we did in Houston. I see the potential for a solid lineup here, and it’s vital we nurture a team-first mentality. Each at-bat matters, and working collectively will be key.”
Interestingly, even after his departure from the Astros, there were offers from other teams, yet Troy found the decision to join the Mets straightforward. “I’m excited about the depth in this organization and can’t wait to roll up my sleeves,” he said.
