Tarik Skubal says the 'Benedict Arnold' comments are 'not fair' after exiting the WBC

Tarik Skubal Prioritizes Tigers Over Team USA in WBC

Tarik Skubal always intended to leave Team USA when the World Baseball Classic kicked off. There was some hesitation, but in the end, his commitment to the Tigers took precedence.

What was unexpected, perhaps, was the social media backlash likening him to Benedict Arnold, the well-known figure who switched allegiances from America to Britain during the Revolutionary War.

Skubal finds this comparison to be, well, unfair. He clarifies that he isn’t abandoning one team for another; he simply has other priorities to juggle.

“It’s not right,” he remarked about the comparisons. “But, you know, that’s part of the business. This is how the game goes. If people really know me and what my teammates think, those comments just don’t hold weight.” He expressed that despite the emotional tug, the choice was always in line with his original plan.

Interestingly, he emphasized that the criticisms from online commenters didn’t sway him as they were made by people unfamiliar with his situation. However, his teammates’ opinions mattered significantly. He discussed his decision with many of them before coming to the realization that going back wasn’t feasible.

“I was sifting through all the information, trying to come up with a game plan,” he explained. “It felt like I was taking on too much. So, as much as I wanted to be there and play, this truly was the plan from the beginning.”

In his only WBC appearance, Skubal pitched three innings against Great Britain, allowing just one run from Nate Eaton’s lead-off homer while striking out five and only giving up one more hit, contributing to America’s 9-1 win.

Ultimately, his main commitment lies with the Tigers. They’re in a strong position with a solid rotation and aspirations for the playoffs. Alongside Skubal, they’ve added past Cy Young winners like Framber Valdez and Justin Verlander while keeping Casey Mize and Jack Flaherty on the roster.

If Skubal had opted to remain with Team USA until the finals, if they made it that far, he would face a tight nine-day gap before Opening Day. However, he mentioned that if the U.S. reaches the finals, he intends to return to support his teammates from the sidelines.

So, is he really like Benedict Arnold? I think he would disagree with that sentiment.
