Iran-linked hacker group carries out damaging cyberattack on US healthcare firm

Cyberattack on U.S. Healthcare Company

A hacker group with ties to Iran recently announced it was behind a serious cyberattack on a U.S. healthcare firm, marking the first such incident since the conflict between the countries escalated.

The target was Stryker, a medical device manufacturer based in Michigan. The company reported a “global network disruption” affecting its Microsoft applications. In a statement, Stryker said:

“There are no signs of ransomware or malware, and we believe the incident has been contained. Our team is working quickly to understand the impact of the attack on our systems.”

During the hack, the logo of the Iranian-linked group Handara appeared on Stryker’s login page, according to various reports. The group later took to social media platforms like X and Telegram to claim responsibility for the attack.

In its communications, Handara stated it seized around 50 terabytes of crucial data from Stryker. The attack, they say, was retaliation for a tragic incident in which at least 175 schoolgirls were killed in Minab during a U.S.-Israeli military operation against Iran. They mentioned that “all data is now in the hands of free people.”

This “hacktivist” group emerged in 2022 and has been linked to previous cyberattacks against Israeli entities and those in the Gulf region, according to reported findings from several threat intelligence firms.

Employees at Stryker reported to NBC News that business phones weren’t operational, effectively bringing the work of the company, which employs around 56,000 people, to a standstill. There are also indications that some devices had data wiped during the attack.

In a warning to staff, Stryker advised against clicking on any suspicious links and encouraged employees to remove mobile device management apps and work profiles from their personal devices. The message highlighted that “the issues are widespread and have a significant impact on users’ ability to access our systems and services.”

While the specifics of how the cyberattack was executed remain unclear, the accuracy of Handara’s claims about data theft has yet to be verified. As of now, neither Stryker nor Microsoft has provided additional comments regarding the situation.
