UN Secretary-General’s Message for Ramadan
In a recent video message, United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres emphasized the importance of Islam and Ramadan as keys to societal prosperity. He highlighted the need for embracing a “noble vision of hope and peace” that resonates with the values cherished by Muslims worldwide.
This call to reflect on the teachings of Ramadan came as Guterres, a seasoned Portuguese socialist, arrived in Turkey to fast alongside Muslims, expressing solidarity with their faith.
His visit follows his remarks on the United Nations’ International Day to Combat Islamophobia, where he reiterated the diversity of the global Muslim population, which numbers around two billion and comes from various backgrounds.
Guterres acknowledged the increasing reality of “Islamophobia” and urged the international community to work towards eliminating this issue from all nations and societies.
He stated, “For Muslims around the world, the holy month of Ramadan is a sacred period of reflection and prayer.” He acknowledged that while Ramadan symbolizes hope and peace, too many people still experience suffering.
From regions like Afghanistan and Yemen to Gaza and Sudan, conflict, hunger, and discrimination impose hardships on countless individuals.
In these trying times, Guterres called for unity and the transformative message of Ramadan. His desire is to alleviate the pain of those in distress and ensure that everyone’s rights and dignity are upheld.
He shared that each year, he visits Muslim communities and participates in fasting, returning invigorated by the spirit of compassion found during Ramadan. He hopes this sacred month encourages collective efforts toward building a peaceful and just world.
Ramadan Kareem!
Ramadan is the ninth and most sacred month of the Islamic lunar calendar, characterized by fasting, prayer, and reflection observed by Muslims globally from dawn until dusk. This period involves abstaining from eating, drinking, smoking, and sexual relations during the day.
