Dwight Howard Retires from Basketball Amid Personal Turmoil
Dwight Howard is making headlines again, this time calling for a pause in his basketball career.
Just two days after initiating divorce proceedings from Amber Rose Howard, the 2020 NBA champion shared his retirement announcement on social media on Thursday.
“On the 12th of this month, I woke up and thought it was time for the next chapter beyond Superman!” Howard expressed on X. “I’m not superhuman. I cry! I struggle! I have feelings like everyone else. Despite the lies, the media scrutiny, and the negativity, I still choose to spread love and find joy amid the chaos.”
“Now, I’m stepping back from basketball to focus on my family and give back to communities globally. Many of you might have assumed I was already ‘retired,’ but I assure you, I wasn’t. The game made the decision for me! I genuinely felt I still had something left to contribute. Yes, I played for 20 years, and I’m thankful for that, but seeing others thrive at 40 inspired me to keep pushing. I think it’s now my mission to mentor the next generation.”
“Thanks to all my fans and supporters throughout this journey. I can’t express how much you mean to me; I wouldn’t be who I am without you!”
The 40-year-old hasn’t played in the NBA since 2022 and last appeared in the Big Three league. He mentioned a documentary about his career will be released this year, aiming to reveal the “truth” about how he has been “used by the world.”
“I also extend my gratitude to the doubters, the haters, and those who tried to bring me down. They only made me stronger. When the documentary is out, it will portray the full story. The world will see how a boy from College Park, Georgia, who attended the same school from kindergarten to 12th grade was taken advantage of, yet still managed to keep a smile.”
The timing of this announcement is certainly intriguing, given recent events.
Howard’s divorce from Amber, also known as Amy Luciani, was made public on Monday amid shocking allegations from her. She claimed that her daughter was involved in a video that led to Child Protective Services getting involved but stated she hadn’t heard from Howard since. This isn’t their first bout of difficulty; Amber filed for divorce back in July 2025 just six months into their marriage, describing their relationship as “irretrievably broken.”
On Monday, while Amber filed for divorce too, it was Howard’s paperwork that got processed first.
Reports indicate that Howard, a Hall of Famer and eight-time All-Star, has requested exclusive access to his Georgia mansion during their separation, yet unresolved issues seem to linger. TMZ reported that local police received calls to their residence three times in two weeks, dealing with “suicide threats, domestic incidents, and theft reports.”
On March 7, Howard alleged that while Amber was out picking up their daughter, she took his jewelry, wedding ring, and cellphone before leaving in a gray Camaro—details obtained from a 911 call to law enforcement. He was told that an officer would reach out to assist him in filing a report. This incident unfolded just two days before his divorce filing.
During his illustrious 18-year NBA career, Howard spent around eight years with the Orlando Magic after being selected first overall in the 2004 Draft, where he earned the Defensive Player of the Year award three times. He also played for several other teams, including the Lakers, Rockets, Hawks, Hornets, Wizards, and Sixers, concluding his NBA journey with the Lakers in the 2021-22 season. He is set to be inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame in 2025 and spent the 2022-23 season with the Taoyuan Leopards in Taiwan.
